Manaus bus drivers threaten strike over delayed wages

The union representing urban bus drivers in Manaus approved an indication of a strike after salary payments were delayed. Union president Givancir Oliveira warned that if wages are not received by the fifth business day of the next month, the drivers will halt bus services, saying “Manaus will stop.” The warning was directed at Mayor Renato Junior, Governor Roberto Cidade, the Ministry of Public and the transport companies.

The threat follows a partial walkout that ended last week, which disrupted service for thousands of passengers. Workers reiterated their desire to work but will not accept further delays, emphasizing that the advance notice is meant to avoid surprise and to pressure authorities to meet payroll deadlines.
