Manaus transport strike ends after wage and benefit agreement
Special transport workers in Manaus have ended a strike that disrupted routes serving the Polo Industrial de Manaus (PIM). The work stoppage, which began early Thursday, caused significant traffic congestion and threatened production lines in the industrial district.
An agreement reached between the workers' union (Sindespecial) and sector employers includes a 5.5% salary increase. Key concessions include a substantial rise in the food allowance, which increases from R$ 165 to R$ 500, and an adjustment of the basic food basket to R$ 520. Additionally, the agreement provides temporary job security for workers who participated in the strike until October 2026.
Separately, a planned general strike by urban bus drivers, which threatened to paralyze 70% of the city's fleet, was canceled. This cancellation followed assurances that wages would be paid following the transfer of student transit subsidies by the local government.
