Manchester police disrupt alleged terror plot against Jewish community

British counter-terrorism police have disrupted an alleged plot targeting the Jewish community in North West England. Two men, approximately 30 years old, were arrested in central Manchester on Sunday, September 20th.

The operation was the result of a long-running proactive investigation. In addition to the arrests in Manchester, police conducted searches at residential addresses in Salford and Liverpool.

Vicki Evans, the senior national coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing, stated that the investigation led to the disruption of a plot believed to target the Jewish community in the Manchester area. While investigators do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the public, Greater Manchester Police have increased security measures around synagogues and community gathering points in anticipation of upcoming Jewish holidays, including Yom Kippur.

Marc Levy, chief executive of the Jewish Representative Council of Greater Manchester, expressed gratitude to the police and security services for preventing a potential tragedy. The incident follows a previous attack at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue that resulted in two deaths.
