Ceuta leaders demand immediate migrant returns and EU action

Conservative leaders from the European People's Party (EPP) and the Spanish People's Party (PP) visited Ceuta on Monday to demand urgent action regarding the ongoing migration crisis. Manfred Weber, President of the EPP, and Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of the PP, joined Ceuta President Juan Jesús Vivas to criticize the Spanish government's handling of the situation following a mass entry event in late July.

Approximately 18,000 immigrants remain in the city, many living in improvised tent camps. Weber and Feijóo called for the immediate return of these individuals to Morocco, arguing that the EU Migration Pact and Return Regulation allow for such measures. Weber emphasized that Ceuta is both Spanish and European territory, warning that failure to protect these borders would have obvious consequences.

Feijóo specifically demanded an increased and permanent presence of Frontex in the enclave and urged the activation of all European diplomatic channels to defend the city's integrity. Meanwhile, the political party Podemos criticized the government's inaction, claiming it is fueling racism and xenophobia within the city. Juan Jesús Vivas accused the central government of failing its constitutional obligation to protect the security and territorial integrity of Ceuta.
