Manfred Weber's comments on Romanian politics spark PSD rebuttal

Manfred Weber, leader of the European Parliament's European People's Party (PPE) group, issued a message after the PNL congress congratulating Ilie Bolojan on his re‑election and stating that "Romania needs a strong PNL". He called for strong centre‑right parties in Europe to reform, govern responsibly and defend European values.

Victor Negrescu, vice‑president of the European Parliament and member of Romania's Social Democratic Party (PSD), responded that Weber's statements were "visible misinformation" that ignored PSD's contributions to Romania's political stability and European trajectory. Negrescu highlighted the PSD's role in presenting a joint list for the European elections and argued that Weber was overlooking the party's concrete results in the country.

The PNL congress, convened after President Nicușor Dan appointed Adrian Veștea to form a new government without party consent, also set an ultimatum for five PNL members, including the designated premier, to resign by a set deadline, underscoring ongoing internal party tensions.
