Mangu violence: Mwaghavul group reports multiple killings in Plateau State

The Mwaghavul Development Association (MDA) has called for an urgent investigation into a series of violent attacks in the Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, Nigeria. The association reports that more than 28 members of its community have been killed in less than 10 days, claiming a total of over 750 Mwaghavul people have been killed in attacks since 2023.

In a recent incident at a vegetable market in Mangu town, gunmen opened fire on a vehicle at approximately 8 p.m., killing two women and a young man. The attack caused a stampede, leaving several others injured; those seriously wounded were referred to the Jos University Teaching Hospital.

The MDA also provided details regarding a confrontation in Kikyau Village, alleging the violence followed the killing and decapitation of a resident, Geofrey Kato Gumut. The association stated that local youths searching for the victim's remains encountered a violent response from a nearby settlement. The MDA further rejected claims regarding the ownership of land within Mwaghavul territory, asserting that no land has been legally ceded or transferred to aggressors.
