Violence and insecurity in Plateau State, Nigeria

Overview

Violence in Plateau State, Nigeria, has involved both targeted attacks on security forces and raids on civilian communities. In early August, gunmen ambushed a joint security patrol in the Riyom Local Government Area, killing two operatives and stealing service rifles. By mid-August, suspected militias targeted the Bin-Per community in Mangu, killing between 24 and 26 people and destroying homes and farmlands. Following these attacks, U.S. Senior Advisor Massad Boulos urged the Nigerian government to protect Christian communities.

In September, violence intensified. In Jos South, gunmen ambushed a commercial bus at Dungus Junction, killing at least nine passengers. In Riyom, separate attacks resulted in at least two deaths in the Tahoos area. In Mangu, the Mwaghavul Youth Movement reported killings in the Kikyau, Larkas, Ntul, and Kinat communities. The Mwaghavul Development Association (MDA) has since called for an urgent investigation, reporting that more than 28 community members were killed in less than 10 days. The MDA claims over 750 Mwaghavul people have been killed in attacks since 2023.

Between September 19 and 25, a surge of coordinated attacks occurred. In Barkin Ladi and Riyom, at least nine people were killed, including a Baptist pastor and his secretary in Dorowa Babuje. Further attacks in Barkin Ladi villages, such as Rakwok and Gassa, killed at least 15 Christians. Community leaders identified the assailants as Fulani militants.

By late September, reports from the aid group Equipping the Persecuted highlighted the scale of the crisis, stating that an average of one Christian was killed every 86 minutes in Nigeria through early September. The group documented at least 4,216 Christian deaths between January 1 and September 8. Researchers identified armed Fulani groups as a primary threat in the Middle Belt, including Plateau State.
