Manipur ethnic clashes fueled by community solidarity
Ongoing clashes between Naga and Kuki communities in Manipur have escalated from localized disputes into widespread inter-community conflict. Reports suggest that initial incidents, such as brawls between youths, rapidly transformed into deep-seated enmity that has resulted in numerous deaths and the displacement of thousands.
In Northeast India, a pattern of “communitisation” has emerged, where individual criminal acts are reframed as targeted attacks against specific ethnic groups. This phenomenon involves village councils, NGOs, and social media mobilizing to defend community members regardless of individual culpability. This instinctive closing of ranks often turns personal disputes into village-wide grievances, acting as a significant obstacle to justice, regional development, and the maintenance of public order.
