Manipur faces ongoing ethnic violence and governance challenges
Manipur continues to face significant governance and reconciliation challenges due to ongoing ethnic violence. While conflict initially erupted between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities in May 2023, a separate Naga-Kuki-Zo fault line re-emerged in early 2026. Clashes in the Ukhrul district beginning in February led to arson and displacement, with officials reporting at least 42 civilian deaths related to Naga-Kuki-Zo violence since March.
The political landscape is defined by three primary constituencies—Meitei, Naga, and Kuki-Zo—each with distinct territorial and political aspirations. This creates a zero-sum environment where administrative actions, such as security deployment or land policy, are often viewed through an ethnic lens.
Despite the instability, the state maintains a significant cultural and sporting legacy, including its contributions to polo and various traditional art forms, as well as producing prominent national athletes.
