Manipur violence: One dead and houses burnt in Kamjong district

Renewed ethnic violence has erupted in Manipur’s Kamjong district, resulting in at least one death and multiple injuries. In Chassad village, a Kuki civilian, Seikhohao Haokip, was killed and four others were wounded in a gun attack. Following the shooting, suspected militants reportedly torched at least 15 houses belonging to the Kuki community, forcing residents to seek shelter in forests and nearby security camps.

Simultaneously, tensions rose between rival groups as Tangkhul Naga civilians were reportedly injured in an attack at the Kamjong district headquarters. In the broader Kamjong area, at least 28 houses have been set ablaze in recent days, targeting both Naga and Kuki settlements.

In response to the escalating unrest, the Manipur government transferred the Kamjong Superintendent of Police, Tholu Rocky. Meanwhile, a Kuki outfit has announced a total shutdown of National Highway 202, set to last from October 19 through October 22. Security forces, including the Assam Rifles and Border Security Force, have been deployed to the affected border regions to restore order.
