Manipur statewide shutdown follows killing of three Meitei villagers

A 48-hour statewide shutdown in Manipur, called by the Native People’s Committee Manipur (NPCM) and Iramdam Kanba Lup (IKAL), has severely disrupted normal life across both hill and valley districts. The protest follows an ambush on October 19 in the Khongbal Tangkhul area of Kangpokpi district, where suspected militants opened fire on villagers collecting firewood, killing three Meitei civilians—identified as Lairenpakpam Inaobi Meitei, Aribam Noni Meitei, and Ksh. Sushil Singh—and injuring several others.

The shutdown has resulted in the closure of markets, banks, educational institutions, and private offices, while public transport has been largely suspended. While essential services like healthcare and media remain operational, major roads have been blocked by protesters.

In response to the killings, security forces conducted joint operations involving the Manipur Police, CRPF, and Assam Rifles, resulting in the arrest of three individuals suspected of being part of the assault team. During these raids, authorities seized a significant cache of weapons, including 12 firearms such as AK-47s, M16s, and an INSAS rifle, along with 1,095 rounds of ammunition and various explosives.

Tensions remain high following the death of a 45-year-old Kuki-Zo man, Paolen Khongsai, who was shot by armed assailants in Kangpokpi on October 20. Meanwhile, the Kuki-Zo Women's Forum has called for the reimposition of President's Rule, arguing that the state's crisis is a political issue rather than a security one.
