Turkey agriculture faces economic pressure amid seasonal harvests
Turkish agricultural sectors are experiencing a mix of seasonal harvests and significant economic challenges. In various regions, farmers are managing diverse crops, including aronia in Safranbolu, silage corn in Karapınar, and hazelnuts in Ordu and Giresun. The Turkish Grain Board (TMO) has officially begun purchasing hazelnuts for the 2026-2027 season, setting prices at 255 TL for Giresun quality and 250 TL for Levant quality.
However, many producers are facing severe economic pressure. In Edirne, despite lower tomato prices, consumer interest remains low due to reduced purchasing power. In Erzincan, bean producers report that rising input costs for fertilizer, fuel, and pesticides are outpacing market prices, threatening the sustainability of production. General calls from agricultural representatives highlight a growing crisis caused by high costs and the need for more consistent government support.
Local municipalities are providing targeted aid to mitigate losses from natural disasters. The Manisa Metropolitan Municipality provided free eggplant seedlings to farmers whose crops were destroyed by winter floods, while the Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality distributed fertilizers and amino acids to fruit growers affected by hail. Additionally, the Mardin Metropolitan Municipality has launched a free stone-collection machine service to improve soil productivity for local farmers.
