Manisa to Turn Waste Sludge into Energy and Soil Amendments
Manisa Su ve Kanalizasyon İdaresi (MASKİ) has signed a contract to launch the EU‑funded “Sludge2Energy” project, the first of its kind in Turkey. The eight‑month agreement, worth about 350,000 EUR (roughly 20 million TRY), will see the sludge from the Manisa Central Wastewater Treatment Plant processed by pyrolysis. The resulting gas will supply the plant’s own power needs, while the solid by‑product will be used as a soil‑improving amendment. The initiative is 100 % grant‑funded by the European Union and involves an eight‑partner consortium that includes Greece, Italy and Egypt.
In parallel, MASKİ’s director Ali Kılıç announced a broader infrastructure programme for the province, comprising 46 projects with a total investment of 3.5 billion TRY. These include the 2 billion TRY Muradiye project, new water reservoirs, upgraded sewage networks and measures to address water‑supply interruptions across 17 districts and over 690 000 subscribers.
