Overview
In July 2026 Turkish municipalities and water authorities began implementing waste‑sludge‑to‑energy facilities that use pyrolysis technology. The Samsun Metropolitan Municipality, together with the water utility SASKİ, completed a plant at the Tekkeköy Doğu İleri Biological Waste‑Water Treatment Plant that converts about 70 tonnes of daily sludge into heat and carbon by‑products for use in concrete, asphalt, landfill odor control and forest‑fire mitigation. A few weeks later, the Manisa Water and Sewerage Administration (MASKİ) signed an EU‑funded “Sludge2Energy” contract, the first Turkish plant designed to generate electricity and a soil‑conditioning amendment from wastewater‑treatment sludge. The eight‑month, 350,000 EUR (≈20 million TRY) grant‑funded deal will process sludge from the Manisa Central Wastewater Treatment Plant by pyrolysis, supplying the plant’s own power needs and producing a solid amendment for agriculture. The project involves a consortium with partners from Greece, Italy and Egypt and forms part of a broader provincial infrastructure programme comprising 46 projects worth 3.5 billion TRY, including water reservoirs, upgraded sewage networks and other water‑supply improvements.
