Manitoba allocates $500 million to finish Winnipeg’s North End sewage upgrade

Manitoba government announced a $500 million contribution toward the final phase of the North End Water Pollution Control Centre upgrade in Winnipeg. The funding covers roughly one‑third of the estimated cost of the third phase, bringing the total project cost to about $3 billion. The city has already provided a matching share and is seeking a similar $500 million commitment from the federal government.

The upgrade will add a nutrient‑removal facility to cut algae‑promoting runoff into the Red River and Lake Winnipeg, supporting future residential and industrial growth. Premier Wab Kinew said the investment is vital for the province’s economy and environment, while Mayor Scott Gillingham welcomed the pledge as essential for keeping water‑sewer rates affordable. Construction began in 2021; the first headworks phase is near completion and the biosolids removal phase is slated to start later this year.
