Manitoba healthcare faces emergency room bottlenecks

The state of provincial healthcare in Manitoba remains a central issue in regional politics. Current challenges include emergency room bottlenecks, particularly in Winnipeg, which echo historical concerns regarding healthcare access.

Dr. Alecs Chochinov, former director of emergency medicine at St. Boniface Hospital, has attributed these bottlenecks to ‘access block.’ This phenomenon occurs when a lack of available personal-care home beds and home-care services prevents patients from being moved out of acute-care hospital beds, thereby stalling the flow of patients through emergency departments.
