Healthcare service disruptions in Western Canada

Healthcare systems in Western Canada, specifically in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, have experienced significant operational strain. In Saskatchewan, service disruptions were reported across five facilities, including temporary emergency room disruptions at the Wakaw Primary Health Care Centre and the Preeceville and District Health Centre, alongside long-term outages at Kamsack Hospital, Wolseley Memorial Integrated Care Centre, and the Wilkie and District Health Complex.

In Manitoba, the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority activated surge protocols to manage exceptionally high demand. This included requests for long-term care facilities to create space for hospital patients who could no longer receive acute care. Manitoba Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara described the situation as experiencing ‘unprecedented service levels for the summer months.’

Subsequent reports indicate that Manitoba continues to face emergency room bottlenecks. Dr. Alecs Chochinov, former director of emergency medicine at St. Boniface Hospital, attributed these delays to ‘access block,’ a phenomenon where a lack of available personal-care home beds and home-care services prevents patients from transitioning out of acute-care hospital beds, stalling the flow of patients through emergency departments.
