Manitoba officials hold public consultation on AI privacy and regulation

During a public consultation in Brandon, Manitoba, citizens and government officials discussed the implications of artificial intelligence regarding privacy, cybersecurity, and data protection. The session, held at Brandon University, focused on gathering community perspectives to assist in drafting regulations for Bill 51, the Public Sector Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity Governance Act.

Participants raised concerns about being tracked or monitored by AI and the potential for cybercrime. Innovation and New Technology Minister Mike Moroz emphasized the need for proactive regulation, noting that the pervasive nature of AI requires earlier intervention than previous technologies like cellphones. Discussions also touched upon the ‘right to be forgotten,’ though officials noted that data retention remains critical in sectors such as healthcare.
