Mannheim island blaze burns 30 hectares, 150 firefighters deployed

A large vegetation fire erupted on the Friesenheimer Island in Mannheim on Sunday afternoon, scorching roughly 30 hectares of grass and forest. About 150 firefighters from Mannheim and surrounding districts, as well as the BASF plant fire brigade, fought the blaze. The fire was largely extinguished, with only two small hotspots requiring night‑time monitoring.

No injuries were reported. A nearby animal‑shelter festival was cancelled as a safety precaution, and residents were temporarily advised to keep windows and doors closed due to smoke. The cause of the fire remains unknown.
