Mannheim wildfire engulfs 30 hectares on Friesenheimer Island

On the afternoon of 26 July 2026 a large vegetation fire broke out on the Friesenheimer Island, a river island in the industrial harbour of Mannheim, Germany. The blaze spread rapidly across roughly 30 hectares of fields and grass under strong wind, prompting a full‑alert response.

About 150 firefighters from Mannheim, neighboring districts and the BASF plant fire brigade, supported by police and a rescue service, worked to contain the flames and prevent spread to adjacent industrial facilities. No injuries were reported, and around 150 visitors were escorted to safety. The fire was later linked to suspected pyrotechnic activity, though the exact cause remains under investigation. Cleanup of remaining hotspots was expected to continue into the night, while damage assessments were still pending.
