Brazil Federal Police seize R$ 33 million in electoral crime investigations

The Federal Police in Brazil have reported a significant surge in electoral crime investigations during the 2026 election cycle. As of early October, the institution has opened 1,224 new inquiries related to electoral offenses. These investigations have led to the seizure of more than R$ 33 million in assets and values, with approximately R$ 21 million consisting of cash.

Notable enforcement actions include the arrest of federal deputy candidate Manoel Pioneiro in Belém for suspected electoral corruption and money laundering following a R$ 300,000 cash withdrawal. In Roraima, 23 people were arrested in flagrante for vote-buying schemes. Other operations have intercepted large sums of cash, including R$ 127,000 in Iguatemi and R$ 500,000 in Maranhão, often accompanied by lists of voters and campaign materials.

Beyond financial crimes, authorities are addressing political violence against women, with 94 ongoing investigations. Additionally, candidate Maria Porto has alerted officials to the organized distribution of fraudulent campaign materials containing incorrect ballot numbers. The Federal Police have confirmed they will maintain a nationwide presence during the first round of voting on October 4 to ensure security and combat irregularities.
