Brazilian electoral corruption investigations
Overview
The Brazilian Federal Police have intensified investigations into electoral crimes during the 2026 election cycle. As of early October, the institution has opened 1,224 new inquiries related to electoral offenses, including 94 investigations into political violence against women. Total seizures related to these crimes have exceeded R$ 33 million, with approximately R$ 21 million recovered in cash.
In Manaus, authorities addressed further irregularities through two separate incidents. The Federal Police arrested a 39-year-old personal trainer found with R$ 70.8 thousand in cash, contact lists, and campaign materials for state deputy candidates Dr. Eduardo Assis and Adail Filho. Investigators suspect the items were intended for the “distribution of advantages in exchange for votes.” Additionally, the Civil Police arrested a woman suspected of using false identities to attempt multiple votes for the same candidate while attempting to obtain a duplicate national identity card.
In Roraima, operations in Caracaraí led to the arrest of two individuals for electoral corruption on October 3 and 4. In one instance, police discovered R$ 19,600 in cash hidden on a suspect’s body, accompanied by notes containing names. A second operation intercepted a vehicle at a residence, resulting in the seizure of R$ 1,400, election propaganda, and a list of names associated with specific monetary values. Combined, these Caracaraí actions resulted in the seizure of approximately R$ 21,000 in cash.
Other recent enforcement actions include arrests in Teresina, Piauí, regarding a clinic used for distributing cash, and ‘Operation Moriarty’ in Boa Vista, Roraima, targeting potential illegal financing linked to businessman Renildo Lima. In Rondonópolis, Mato Grosso, authorities seized approximately R$ 235,000 in cash during an operation targeting municipal officials.
