Mantova reports low water loss rates as climate stress intensifies

Mantova has been identified as one of Italy’s most efficient cities in terms of water‑network losses. The city’s loss rate stands at 19.5 %, meaning only 57 litres per person are wasted each day out of 292 litres supplied, placing Mantova 95th out of 109 provincial capitals. By contrast, the national average loss rate is 42.4 %, with Italians collectively losing nearly 3.9 billion cubic metres of water annually – an economic cost estimated at €9.8 billion.

At the same time, Mantova ranks ninth in Italy for exposure to climate‑change impacts, and falls near the bottom of a livability index that evaluates temperature extremes, humidity, precipitation and heat‑island effects. Recent weather has featured prolonged droughts, extreme heat, and a severe storm with strong winds, rain and hail that affected the city and the Po river stretch between San Benedetto Po and Sustinente. The Po district remains under close monitoring for water availability as the region confronts ongoing heat and scarcity.

Both studies highlight how targeted investment, maintenance and management can reduce water waste even in areas facing intensified climate challenges.
