Manuel Adorni submits legal defense to justify assets in enrichment probe

Manuel Adorni, the former Chief of Cabinet of Argentina, has submitted a 78-page legal document to federal prosecutors to justify his assets amid an investigation into alleged illicit enrichment. The defense, led by attorney Matías Ledesma, aims to address 20 specific points raised by prosecutor Gerardo Pollicita regarding inconsistencies in Adorni's financial declarations.

A central component of the defense is the claim that a significant portion of Adorni's wealth—approximately USD 591,544—stems from the liquidation of Bitcoin held in eight digital wallets between 2014 and 2018, prior to his time in public office. To substantiate this, the defense provided private keys to the wallets, verified through a notary act.

The document also addresses discrepancies in real estate and expenses. Regarding a property in Indio Cuá, Adorni stated the purchase cost USD 120,000, largely financed by a USD 100,000 mortgage. He further contested a contractor's claim that renovations cost USD 245,000, asserting instead that the total expenditure was USD 175,000 from personal savings.

Additionally, the defense characterized a reported discrepancy of over 43 million pesos between income and expenses as a “residual gap” rather than a manifest disproportion. The prosecution will now evaluate the technical and accounting evidence provided to determine if the explanations sufficiently account for the reported wealth evolution.
