Chile’s $100 million Cajón del Maipo rescue sparks legal and financial fallout
Manuel Orellana, known as “El Chino”, and two kindergarten teachers, Martina Núñez and Magdalena Retamal, were stranded for six days in the Cajón del Maipo mountain area before being rescued on 22 July. The operation involved Carabineros, the GOPE special police unit, the Police Investigations (PDI), firefighters, the army, SAMU and municipal officials, and a helicopter from GOPE was deployed after a week‑long search.
The state’s expense for the rescue has been estimated at about 100 million Chilean pesos (roughly US$120 k). The regional presidential delegate, Germán Codina, has asked the State Defense Council to study legal actions to recover the cost. A deputy from Renovación Nacional has introduced a bill proposing fines of 11–50 UTM and reimbursement of rescue expenses for anyone who disobeys evacuation orders. Orellana publicly expressed regret, apologized to the nation and said he cannot afford the bill.
