In late July 2026, a snowstorm stranded 19‑year‑old Manuel Orellana and two preschool teachers in the Cajón del Maipo mountain area. A multi‑agency operation involving Carabineros, the PDI, the army, firefighters, SAMU and a GOPE helicopter rescued the trio after six days, with state expenses estimated at about 100 million Chilean pesos (≈US $120 k).

The rescue quickly became a political flashpoint. The regional presidential delegate asked the State Defense Council to explore legal measures to recover the cost, while a Renovación Nacional deputy proposed fines and reimbursement penalties for anyone who defies evacuation orders. Orellana publicly apologized and expressed regret, noting he could not afford the proposed bill.

Public reaction split along lines of responsibility and hardship. Critics called the incident reckless and demanded accountability, whereas supporters highlighted the personal difficulties faced by the rescued individuals.
