Manx Grand Prix: Two racers killed in separate qualifying accidents

Two competitors lost their lives during separate qualifying incidents at the Manx Grand Prix on the Isle of Man.

The first fatality was Mauro Poncini, a 29-year-old experienced Swiss racer competing in the Supersport and Supertwin classes. He died following a crash during the first lap of the second qualifying session.

One day later, 37-year-old local rider Sam Naughton from Castletown died after a collision during the third qualifying session. While another participant involved in the crash sustained minor injuries, Naughton succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.

The Manx Grand Prix takes place on the 60.7-kilometer Snaefell Mountain Course, the same circuit used for the Isle of Man TT. The event is primarily for amateur and novice riders. Due to the nature of the street and road racing, which involves speeds exceeding 300 km/h without significant barriers, fatalities are a known risk. Since its inception in 1907, the course has seen 269 fatalities among participants and spectators.
