MapQuest reaches top of US App Store after refusing political renaming
MapQuest has surged to the top of the United States App Store following its refusal to comply with a political renaming directive. The rise comes after a decree requested that the name of Lake Ontario be changed to ‘Lake America’. While competitors such as Google Maps and Apple Maps updated their services to reflect the new name, MapQuest announced via X that it would maintain the original designation.
This decision triggered a significant spike in user engagement. MapQuest climbed from rank 128 to the number one position on the US App Store, surpassing even gaming applications. Sensor Tower estimates approximately 632,000 downloads in the US since the decree, while MapQuest reports over 1.5 million total installations across the United States and Canada.
Beyond download numbers, MapQuest CEO Doug Berger noted a surge in active user participation, including feature requests and bug reporting. The situation highlights the intersection of cartography, technology, and political influence in digital mapping services.
