Mapy.com expands Austrian hiking trail database to 149,000 km

Mapy.com has significantly expanded its hiking trail database for Austria, increasing the coverage to approximately 149,000 kilometers of marked pedestrian routes. This update adds roughly 54,000 kilometers of data compared to the previous version, which relied on OpenStreetMap data covering about 95,000 kilometers.

To ensure higher reliability, the Mapy.com cartographic team decided to build the Austrian trail network from scratch as a standalone dataset rather than adopting existing open-source data. Editors manually verified the existence, actual course, and specific marking methods of individual trails to address previous issues with incomplete or unverified information.

The new data is integrated into search results, trip planning tools, and offline maps to assist hikers in mountainous terrain where signal may be unavailable. Additionally, the update includes an extensive database of nearly one million points of interest across Austria.
