Mar del Plata celebrates 140 years of railway history with steam locomotive exhibition
Mar del Plata will commemorate the 140th anniversary of the arrival of its first train with a special railway exhibition and historical journey. On Saturday, September 26, the Mar del Plata Train Station will host a free public exhibition from 10:00 to 18:00, organized by the Ferroclub Argentino and the Museo Nacional Ferroviario.
The centerpiece of the event is the Vulcan Foundry N. 3925, a 151-ton steam locomotive that recently completed a 20-year restoration process. The historical formation includes nine vehicles, such as the Werkspoor O. F. 1 official carriage, which was used by Pope John Paul II during his 1982 visit to Argentina, a Hitachi cinema car, and various Pullman and postal carriages.
The commemorative journey involves a special service traveling through the Buenos Aires province, making scheduled stops in Coronel Brandsen, Lezama, Dolores, and Maipú to refuel water for the steam engine. The event aims to preserve and showcase Argentina's railway heritage and the historical impact the railroad had on the development of Mar del Plata as a tourist destination.
