María Corina Machado calls for Venezuelan elections by July 2027
Venezuelan opposition leader and 2025 Nobel Peace Prize winner María Corina Machado is calling for presidential elections to be held by July 2027. In an interview with the Financial Times, Machado argued there is “more than enough time” to organize a free and fair vote, suggesting the process could potentially begin as early as the first half of next year.
Machado also demanded greater transparency regarding the management of oil revenues. She criticized existing oil exploitation agreements, noting that a significant portion of the nation's resources is currently under United States supervision. She stated that both the U.S. government and the Venezuelan people agree that transforming Venezuela into a stable democracy is the only way to ensure long-term sustainability.
The political landscape remains volatile following the capture of Nicolás Maduro by U.S. forces on January 3, which led to his removal from power. Delcy Rodríguez currently serves as interim president and has indicated that elections will occur, though no specific date has been set by her administration. Machado has expressed support for a proposal by U.S. Senator Bernie Moreno to hold elections on July 24, 2027, to coincide with the anniversary of Simón Bolívar.
