Overview

Following the capture of Nicolás Maduro by U.S. forces in January 2026, Venezuela has entered a period of political transition with Delcy Rodríguez serving as interim president. Opposition leader María Corina Machado, a 2025 Nobel Peace Prize winner, has rejected any presidential election that excludes her candidacy, calling for a transparent electoral roadmap and the renewal of the National Electoral Council (CNE).

Machado has proposed that presidential elections be held by July 2027, expressing support for a proposal by U.S. Senator Bernie Moreno to set the date for July 24, 2027. In an interview with the Financial Times, she argued there is “more than enough time” to organize a free and fair vote, suggesting the process could begin in the first half of next year. She also demanded greater transparency regarding oil revenues, noting that much of the nation's resources are currently under United States supervision.

While Machado has announced her intention to lead the transition, she claims the Rodríguez administration is actively preventing her return to the country, citing fears of her ability to mobilize a united citizenry. Machado stated her presence is intended to strengthen civic networks and foster agreements between civilians and the military.

The legitimacy of Machado’s previous political exclusion has been challenged by testimony from Bárbara César Siero, a former magistrate of Venezuela’s Supreme Tribunal of Justice (TSJ), who testified she was coerced into signing disqualification sentences. While U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed support for Machado, the UN Human Rights Council has renewed its mission to investigate rights violations for an additional two years.
