María Corina Machado rejects any Venezuelan election excluding her candidacy

Opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner María Corina Machado has stated that the Venezuelan people will not accept any presidential election in which she is barred from running as a candidate. In an interview with Der Spiegel, Machado emphasized her intention to return to Venezuela and compete in upcoming elections, which she hopes will be held within seven to nine months under transparent conditions.

The political landscape in Venezuela is currently in a state of transition following the capture of Nicolás Maduro by U.S. forces in January 2026. Delcy Rodríguez is serving as interim president. Machado has called for a clear electoral roadmap, including the renewal of the National Electoral Council with independent members.

Opposition negotiator Dinorah Figuera noted that a primary goal of current discussions is to restore political rights to persecuted and exiled figures and to overturn the disqualifications affecting leaders like Machado. Additionally, the European Union has expressed support for the ongoing bilateral dialogue between the government and the opposition.
