María Corina Machado fails seven attempts to return to Venezuela

Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner María Corina Machado has made at least seven unsuccessful attempts to return to Venezuela from her exile in Panama. Her team reported three new failed attempts within a 24 to 48-hour window, involving both maritime and aerial routes.

One recent attempt by sea was canceled due to reported mechanical failures in the vessel. Subsequent attempts to fly from Panama to Aruba and Curaçao were blocked by administrative objections and the refusal of landing permissions by local authorities. Machado remains in Panama.

These developments coincide with a meeting in New York between U.S. President Donald Trump and Venezuelan interim president Delcy Rodríguez during the UN General Assembly. While some reports suggested U.S. pressure might be hindering Machado's return, U.S. Department of State official Cartwright Weiland stated in a Congressional hearing that Machado is a Venezuelan citizen with the right to return.

Separately, Machado was honored in New York with the 2026 Concordia Leadership Prize. Her daughter, Ana Corina Sosa Machado, accepted the award on her behalf during the Concordia Annual Summit.
