María Corina Machado calls for Venezuelan elections within one year

Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner María Corina Machado has called for a strategic roadmap to hold presidential elections within the next year. In a recent opinion piece, Machado emphasized that her return to Venezuela is urgent to strengthen civic organization and facilitate a peaceful democratic transition.

Machado's team reports that she has made at least seven attempts to re-enter the country via air and sea from Panama, but has been blocked by authorities. Vente Venezuela officials stated that legal and diplomatic efforts are currently being aligned to secure her return, which could happen in the coming days.

In response to Machado's calls, U.S. President Donald Trump offered praise for her character, describing her as an “excellent woman,” but stopped short of explicitly committing to a specific policy to facilitate her return. Trump noted that Machado had previously presented him with her Nobel medal, remarking that “everything will turn out well.”

Amidst these political developments, the relationship between Washington and Caracas remains complex. Recent energy agreements have granted U.S. companies access to Venezuelan crude reserves, a move that some critics suggest prioritizes energy interests over democratic reforms.
