Maracanã management faces fines and pitch quality criticism

The Consórcio Fla-Flu, the entity responsible for managing the Maracanã stadium, has been fined by the Government of the State of Rio de Janeiro due to failures in cleaning and conservation. The penalty, which amounts to approximately R$ 401,217.48 (representing 2% of the R$ 20 million annual concession fee), was applied following reports from an independent verifier regarding structural and maintenance flaws. The consortium has filed an administrative appeal, temporarily suspending the collection.

In addition to the financial penalty, the stadium's management is facing intense criticism regarding the poor condition of the playing field. CEO Fred Nantes acknowledged that the pitch quality is not meeting expectations, citing several technical factors: a significant increase in humidity, higher temperatures affecting grass density, and shorter recovery intervals between matches. To address these issues, the management has announced plans to change the type of grass used starting in 2027.
