Maracanã stadium management disputes and maintenance issues

Overview

The Rio de Janeiro State Government has fined the Consórcio Fla-Flu, the entity managing the Maracanã stadium, more than R$ 401,000. The penalty, equivalent to 2% of the annual R$ 20 million concession fee, stems from an independent verification report citing failures in cleaning, maintenance planning, and document management.

The consortium has filed an administrative appeal, which has temporarily suspended the collection of the fine.

Beyond the financial penalties, the management is facing criticism regarding the poor quality of the stadium's playing field. CEO Fred Nantes attributed the pitch issues to increased humidity, higher temperatures affecting grass density, and shorter recovery intervals between matches. In response, management has announced plans to implement a different type of grass starting in 2027.
