Brazil prepares for 2026 General Elections

Brazil is finalizing preparations for the 2026 General Elections, scheduled for a first round on October 4 and a potential second round on October 25. The Superior Electoral Court (TSE) has implemented several new measures and regulations to ensure a secure and inclusive process.

Key updates include a strict prohibition on the use of deepfakes and AI-manipulated content to deceive voters. To enhance accessibility, the TSE reports that nearly two million voters with disabilities are eligible to participate, supported by over 220,000 adapted polling stations and improved electronic voting machine interfaces. Specialized free transportation programs are also available for voters with reduced mobility.

Electoral rules for 2026 mandate that voters select six different candidates in the first round. Security measures include a prohibition on the arrest of political candidates starting September 19 and a nationwide ban on the transport of weapons and ammunition by collectors, shooters, and hunters (CACs) between October 3 and October 5. Voting will take place from 8:00 to 17:00 Brasília time.
