Marathon: Remains of 90-year-old woman found in basement after 10-year disappearance

Authorities in Marathon have arrested a 68-year-old woman and her son following the discovery of human remains in the basement of their home. The remains, which were found wrapped in plastic, paper, and sheets, are believed to belong to a 90-year-old woman who had been missing for approximately ten years.

The investigation began after the woman's granddaughter reported losing contact with her grandmother. While the daughter initially directed police to search the garden, the remains were ultimately located in a basement storage area. The 68-year-old daughter has confessed to concealing the death, claiming her mother died of natural causes after a fall. She stated she hid the body to continue receiving her mother's pension, which was approximately 1,000 euros per month, to combat financial difficulties.

Police and bank records indicate that the deceased woman's pension was still being collected, with withdrawals made as recently as August 2026. The suspects face charges of failing to report the discovery of a deceased person, and authorities are also investigating potential fraud against the state. An anthropologist and forensic experts are working to confirm the identity of the remains and determine the exact time and cause of death.
