Investigation into elderly woman's death in Marathon

Overview

Authorities in Marathon have arrested a 68-year-old woman and her son following the discovery of human remains in a basement storage area. The remains, found wrapped in plastic, paper, and sheets, are believed to belong to a 90-year-old woman who had been missing for approximately ten years.

The investigation was triggered after the deceased's granddaughter reported losing contact with her grandmother. The granddaughter became suspicious while attempting to obtain a death certificate to facilitate the sale of family property, noting she had never been informed of a formal burial after being told in 2017 that her grandmother had died of intestinal cancer. Although the 68-year-old initially directed police to search the garden, the remains were located in the basement.

The 68-year-old woman confessed to concealing the death, claiming her mother died of natural causes after a fall. She stated she hid the body to continue receiving her mother’s pension of approximately 1,000 euros per month to address financial difficulties. Bank records indicate pension withdrawals were made as recently as August 2026.

The suspects face charges related to the desecration of a corpse. While the mother admitted to burying the remains, her son denies involvement. A trial is scheduled for Monday. Investigators and forensic anthropologists are working to confirm the identity of the remains and determine the exact time and cause of death. If the pension fraud is found to exceed 120,000 euros, the charges could be elevated to a felony for fraud against the state.
