Marathon: Two detained after 90-year-old's remains found in basement
A 68-year-old woman and her son are in custody in Marathon, Greece, facing charges of desecrating a corpse. The remains of a 90-year-old woman were discovered in plastic bags inside a basement storage room of a family home.
The discovery was made following a report from the deceased's granddaughter, who became suspicious while attempting to obtain a death certificate to facilitate the sale of the family property. The granddaughter noted that she had not been informed of a formal burial after being told in 2017 that her grandmother had passed away from intestinal cancer.
The 68-year-old suspect has reportedly admitted to hiding the body to continue receiving the elderly woman's pension. While the son denies involvement, both face legal proceedings scheduled for Monday.
A forensic anthropologist is examining the remains to determine the exact time of death. This investigation is critical for determining whether the suspects will face felony charges for fraud against the state, which could occur if the total amount of illegally obtained pension funds exceeds 120,000 euros.
