Marble trends and maintenance in modern kitchen design

Marble is evolving from a neutral kitchen element into a centerpiece characterized by intense colors and bold patterns. Modern trends move away from uniform surfaces toward slabs with strong veining and natural imperfections in shades like burgundy, deep green, gold, and purple, such as the Calacatta Viola variety. To maintain balance, designers recommend pairing expressive marble with simple cabinetry and warm materials like oak or walnut to prevent the space from feeling too cold.

Because marble is a porous and relatively soft natural stone, it requires specific maintenance to prevent staining and erosion. Interior designer Audrey Scheck notes that while marble requires a gentle cleaning approach, it "ages beautifully and acquires a unique patina over time." Recommended cleaning tools include microfiber cloths, pH-neutral dish soap, warm water, and baking soda for tough stains. To avoid damage, users should avoid harsh chemicals and focus on protecting the surface from liquids.
