Modern interior design trends show an increasing use of marble as a central, expressive element. In kitchens, the focus has shifted from uniform surfaces toward slabs with bold veining and intense colors, such as burgundy, deep green, gold, and purple. To balance these patterns, designers suggest pairing them with simple cabinetry and warm materials like oak or walnut.

Beyond kitchens, marble is being utilized in fireplaces, particularly in the United Kingdom, where homeowners are merging traditional elegance with modern minimalism. Trends include using neutral palettes of white, gray, and cream, alongside floor-to-ceiling installations designed to emphasize architectural height.

However, the use of marble has sparked a debate regarding aesthetics versus functionality. While interior designer Audrey Scheck notes that marble “ages beautifully and acquires a unique patina over time,” other professionals urge caution. Construction engineer David López advises against using marble in food preparation areas due to its high porosity, noting it easily absorbs liquids like wine, oil, and lemon juice, which can cause permanent staining.

Recent expert guidance reinforces these concerns, noting that because marble is composed largely of calcium carbonate, it is susceptible to chemical attacks from acidic substances like vinegar, which can cause permanent dull spots. Consequently, quartz and granite are increasingly recommended for their resistance to scratches and moisture. Quartz offers a low-porosity surface, though it must avoid extreme heat. Additionally, large-format porcelain is emerging as a competitor; manufacturers like Alamin produce non-porous slabs that replicate marble aesthetics while providing superior resistance to stains and daily wear.
