PSD leaders face criticism over luxury displays at Timișoara event

Romanian Social Democratic Party (PSD) leaders are facing public backlash following a luxury baptism ceremony for the third child of Alfred Simonis, President of the Timiș County Council. The event, held in Timișoara, drew criticism regarding the perceived opulence of the guests during a period of economic hardship for many Romanians.

Marcel Ciolacu, former Prime Minister and current President of the Buzău County Council, confirmed he has postponed his wedding to Sorina Docuz, stating they will remain “in probe for a period.” The decision follows controversy over a fur coat worn by Docuz at the event. While some estimated the garment cost up to 17,000 euros, Ciolacu clarified it was purchased at a bazaar in Istanbul for 500 euros.

Sorin Grindeanu, President of the PSD, addressed the controversy, stating that party officials must be more mindful of the messages they convey during private events. He expressed regret for the perception created among citizens experiencing economic difficulties. Other attendees included high-ranking officials such as Lia Olguța Vasilescu, Claudiu Manda, and Alexandru Rafila.
