PSD leadership controversy over Timis County event

Alfred Simonis, President of the Timis County Council, hosted a large-scale baptism ceremony for his third son, Alexander, in Timisoara. The event was attended by approximately 500 guests, including high-ranking members of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) such as Sorin Grindeanu, Marcel Ciolacu, Lia Olguța Vasilescu, and Claudiu Manda. Other notable attendees included Health Minister Alexandru Rogobete, Minister of Labor Florin Manole, and Alexandru Rafila.

The celebration featured musical performances by Al Bano, Damian Drăghici, and Theo Rose, with reports estimating the entertainment costs between 150,000 and 200,000 euros. The event drew public scrutiny due to the perceived contrast between the display of luxury and the economic challenges facing the Romanian population.

Specifically, PSD leaders faced backlash regarding the opulent attire displayed by guests. Marcel Ciolacu, former Prime Minister and current President of the Buzău County Council, addressed controversy surrounding a fur garment worn by his partner, Sorina Docuz. While some media reports estimated the garment was worth up to 17,000 euros, Ciolacu claimed it was purchased for 500 euros in an Istanbul bazaar. In response to the backlash, Ciolacu announced that his wedding to Docuz has been postponed, stating their relationship will remain “in probe for a period.”

PSD President Sorin Grindeanu expressed regret over the perception created by the event, stating that public officials must be mindful of the messages they transmit during private functions.
