Marcelo Ebrard Faces Resignation Calls Over TMEC Renewal Failure

PAN deputies in Mexico's lower house demanded the resignation of Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard, arguing that the government failed to secure an automatic renewal of the US‑Mexico‑Canada trade pact (TMEC). They cited the United States' decision, announced for 1 July 2026, to forgo a 16‑year automatic extension, meaning the treaty will now be subject to annual reviews until 2036. The criticism follows the third round of TMEC talks held in Mexico City from 21‑23 July, attended by Ebrard and U.S. representative Jamieson Greer, which resulted in a pledge for a further meeting in September.

Supporters from the ruling Morena party, including President‑elect Claudia Sheinbaum, praised the negotiation strategy, while PAN lawmakers warned that the loss of automatic renewal threatens investor confidence, noting that TMEC underpins roughly 80 % of Mexico's exports and is a cornerstone for foreign investment.
