Marcelo Gallardo says he will never leave River Plate as he steps back from coaching

Marcelo Gallardo, the former River Plate coach, announced he is taking a break after leaving ESPN’s coverage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. In an interview he said, “Tengo ganas de disfrutar como lo estoy haciendo ahora, por eso me tomé este recreo,” and dismissed speculation that he might take the Uruguay national‑team job, stating “Uruguay? No tengo nada que ver con lo que se habla.”

Gallardo reaffirmed his lifelong bond with River, declaring “Yo nunca me voy a ir de River” and saying he could support the club in everyday ways, such as taking his children to matches, without seeking an official position. He stressed he would only return to a role if it aligned with his personal convictions.

The comments underscore Gallardo’s personal priorities and the continued emotional link he maintains with the Argentine side he regards as inseparable from his life.
