March on Washington: Martin Luther King Jr. and the fight for civil rights

The 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom remains a landmark event in the American Civil Rights Movement. While Martin Luther King Jr. is widely celebrated for his “I Have a Dream” speech delivered at the Lincoln Memorial, the event also featured significant contributions from other speakers, such as Rabbi Joachim Prinz.

Rabbi Prinz, a refugee from Nazi Germany, addressed the crowd of hundreds of thousands, expressing solidarity with Black Americans based on his own historic experience with oppression and the Jewish struggle for emancipation. He emphasized that the responsibility to preserve human dignity is a moral concept that transcends geography.

During his address, King utilized powerful metaphors to describe the systemic inequality faced by Black citizens. He famously characterized the nation’s failure to uphold the promises of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence as delivering a “cheque without funds” to the Black community, highlighting the gap between American ideals and the reality of racial injustice.
