Washington voting rights protest

Overview

On August 28, 2026, thousands of demonstrators gathered at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., for the ‘March on Washington 2026: Defend the Vote.’ Organized by the National Action Network and the Drum Major Institute, the event commemorated the 63rd anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s 1963 speech.

The march functioned as a protest against perceived civil rights rollbacks, specifically targeting a Supreme Court decision that weakened a provision of the Voting Rights Act. Organizers and speakers expressed concern that redistricting efforts by Republican-led legislatures in the South could diminish the political representation of minority communities. Participants urged voters to engage in the upcoming November midterm elections to protect democratic foundations.
