Marche region hit by severe storms and widespread flooding

Severe thunderstorms and intense rainfall caused widespread flooding and damage across the Marche region in Italy. The storm, which peaked around midday, hit areas including Porto Sant’Elpidio, Civitanova Marche, Macerata, and Fermo, as well as parts of Ancona such as Jesi and the Vallesina area.

In Porto Sant’Elpidio, numerous underpasses and roads were submerged. While warning systems functioned in some areas, some motorists became trapped in flooded underpasses, requiring rescue by firefighters. Local authorities reported over 30 instances of flooded basements and ground floors in residential buildings. Significant flooding also affected sections of the Statale 16 highway and various urban streets.

Other reported damages include fallen trees in Recanati, Matelica, and Camerino. In Civitanova Marche, a tree fell on a parked car near a hospital emergency room, though no injuries were reported. In Jesi, heavy rain caused difficulties on the Granita bridge and led to the closure of several pedestrian and vehicle underpasses. Additionally, water infiltration was reported at the Carlo Urbani hospital, specifically affecting certain wards and the obstetrics department.
