July–September 2026 Italian storms, drought and water crises

Overview

The late‑July hailstorm complex across central and northern Italy continues to generate mounting loss estimates and expanded relief measures. Insured agricultural damage now exceeds €700 million, while total economic losses—including hail, wildfire and wind events—are estimated at over €100 million. Municipalities such as Crema, San Benedetto del Tronto and Ferrara have applied for a state of emergency, and regional authorities in Abruzzo, Marche, Campania and Emilia‑Romagna have declared states of calamity or crisis. As the 2026 harvest progresses, regional outcomes remain mixed. In Puglia, Confagricoltura reports a 10% increase in grape production, though high winery stocks and market shifts present commercial challenges. Conversely, in Sicily, the association ‘I Guardiani del Territorio’ has challenged optimistic reports of a ‘great year,’ citing concerns over water availability, production costs, and reduced yields in western regions. Water scarcity and infrastructure issues persist in Pesaro, Ferrara, and Calabria. Severe weather intensified in late August, with violent supercell storms affecting Lombardy and Veneto. In Cremona, a ‘tromba d’aria’ caused catastrophic damage to the historic center and the Cathedral of Santa Maria della Assunzione. In the Mantua province, wind gusts reached 148 km/h, damaging crops and farm structures. In early September, severe weather continued to cause localized damage in Pentone and the Isarco Valley. An Atlantic weather system has since triggered widespread orange alerts, particularly in Tuscany, where municipal orders closed schools and public buildings. In Como, mud and debris from a swollen stream forced family evacuations, while in Città di Castello, a vehicle was trapped in a flooded underpass. On September 9, severe storms and high winds also impacted northern Italy and Slovenia, causing rail disruptions on the Brenner line and near Cremona.
